Breaking News! The Dalai Lama Set To Come To Vancouver / Also New Movie Review : A Trip To Italy
by Staff Writer

Among the top events this in October is the much awaited visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He’s set to visit Vancouver to teach about compassion and meet students, educators and like-minded groups and individuals. Part of his schedule is teaching a full day on compassion at the UBC Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre on October 23. For many people, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to listen to the talk by one of the world’s most important peace activists.
The topic may seem simplistic but it has historical significance since in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, it has a continuous 2000 year-old history as a direct transmission of wisdom and compassion passed from teacher to the learner. Just for attending, every audience member will receive a blessed artifact from His Holiness.
For avid shoppers, a Himalayan marketplace will be set up with unique vendors, artisans, and community groups.
This event is co-organized by the Tibetan Cultural Society of British Columbia (TCSBC) and the Tsengdok Monastery Association. Event proceeds will go to supporting the BC chapter of the Tibetan Resettlement Project, an humanitarian initiative by His Holiness the Dalai Lama to resettle 1000 displaced Tibetans to Canada.
The Dalai Lama’s visit to Vancouver would be his 6th visit in October. If you want a sample of his teachings, all you have to do is search on The Internet for his quotes. Among one of my favourites is:

This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.

This writer wonders why the topic of compassion is not more widespread in society where much mainstream videos and movies are a lot about the acquisition of things like wealth and power.

VIFF Is A Movie Festival For All Tastes
by Staff Writer

by Nancy Chan, Movie and Arts Critic

Photo: middle, False Creek, Vancouver, BC. Vancouver is a favorite destination for filmmakers who like the scenery and the city’s talented creative force.

Wisertraveller.org is looking forward to doing some armchair travelling, as we gear up for the 33rd annual Vancouver International Film Festival (from September 25 to October 10).

Almost 350 films from 70 countries, plenty of post-screening Q & A sessions with established and up-and-coming directors, actors, and writers, 2014 Cannes Film Festival highlights and other award-winning films – we’re already giddy at the thought!   There’s also a focus on some BC film treats, with such provocative names as Martin’s Pink Pickle and Sitting on the Edge of Marlene.

Controversy, murder, mayhem, existentialism, nihilism, sex, lies and videotape, the sins of man and the beauty of the planet  – our intrepid film critic -that’s me! — will offer my take on the festival’s highlights and lowlights.   Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a fantastic ride!

If you want to check out the movies and film sessions available, check out http://www.viff.org

So why check out the festival? You might see a  movie worthy of an Oscar! Also, lots of these movies may not be available at home on the smaller screen. Or you just might be inspired to pen a great movie. There are so many reasons to check out this year’s fest!
See you there!
