Saying So Long To A Local Favorite –Griffin’s Restaurant
by Staff Writer

November 25 2013

One of Vancouver’s popular restaurant, Griffin’s, located inside the historic Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, served its popular buffets and dinners to tourists and locals for the last time earlier this month. On November 5, the restaurant shut down for good, which means that its spacious 3,600 square foot area would be earmarked for retail space.

We chowed down to a sumptuous buffet that included seafood and a selection of finely prepared dessert. Our waitress, who admitted to working at Griffins for years,  made it clear that she was sad to see the loss of the restaurant and seemed less enthusiastic about moving to 900 West, pointing out the amount of stairs involved in working in the other facility. A few other regular diners were there, enjoying one last opportunity to savour the elegant atmosphere of Griffins which opened in 1995 and designed by celebrity chef, Jeremiah Tower.

On this day, the chefs and the cooking assistants, oblivious to the restaurant patrons, lined up for a photograph by a restaurant employee.

For myself, a must-have at Griffins were the deep fried oysters and the seafood chowder, which was strangely a no-show when we visited. The dessert buffet was also without question a winner. Let’s hope management will offer a similar menu down at the hotel, which is slated for a major renovation.
